Toronto Public Library, Pleasant View Branch

Construction completion — Fall 2026

The Pleasant View neighbourhood is growing and the Toronto Public Library wanted to bring the branch from the minimum standard to a Neighbourhood Branch. The Library is located adjacent to the Pleasant View Middle School and the Pleasant View Community Centre and will provide increased services and resources for its visitors.

The Library’s architecture is centered around capitalizing on the forms of natural light conditions throughout a day and corresponding it to the appropriate programming. The building lifts itself towards the east where the reading area paired with newspapers and periodicals provide seniors with ambient reading light.

As the sun moves south, a cantilevered screen allows indirect light to stream through the large windows into the Reading Garden and Children’s area. As the sun begins to set in the afternoon, two clerestories light up the Teen areas and study spaces with soft dusk light. Two additional clerestories were added to the existing library building to brighten up the staff areas.

The newly designed space also takes inspiration from the existing berms and green space located around the property, where the library will act as a pavilion in a park. Keeping with the importance of sustainability and green space, the 3,000 sf addition will feature a green roof.
